Running a design website or blog? Why you need alt tags NOW
So Google rolled out their new, Bing-inspired interface. Some people like it, some not quite as much. Regardless of how you feel about it, it does bring to light some important points of consideration with respect to the ranking your site.
One of the most interesting thing I cam across was the new option “Sites with images”. See? That option in the left sidebar.

Why do you care?
Good question; ok, say I want to search for graphic design Sydney.
Check out how the ranking changes: whereas with the default search my site was number 2, now it becomes number 3. And even more of a bummer, not all my portfolio images have alt tags, which seems to prevent Google from indexing them properly.

What to do about it?
I went and put in alt tags for everything – which I suggest you do too, if you’re running an image-centric website.
If not in a mood to do it manually and you’re on WordPress there’s a nice plugin that does it for you: SEO Friendly Images.
